Community – Involvement
Involvement
As a company doing business throughout North America, Waste Management strives to be a good corporate citizen. This includes becoming involved with local and company wide organizations that are working hard to address community concerns. Waste Management actively supports many events and celebrations. Whether extending our service to these special events, helping to host them or providing employee volunteers, WM is involved in activities that help make communities safer, stronger, better and more fun!

Wildlife Habitat Council
Across the U.S. and Canada, 33
Waste Management sites have earned WHC certification.
The Wildlife Habitat Council’s Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification/International Accreditation recognizes commendable wildlife habitat management and environmental education programs at individual sites through the Wildlife at Work program. WHC certification adds value to programs by providing third-party credibility and an objective evaluation of projects.
The Wildlife Habitat Council is a non-profit, non-lobbying organization dedicated to increasing the quality and amount of wildlife habitat on corporate, private and public lands. WHC devotes its resources to building partnerships with corporations and conservation groups to create solutions that balance the demands of economic growth with the requirements of a healthy, bio-diverse and sustainable environment. More than two million acres in 48 states, Puerto Rico and 16 other countries are managed for wildlife through WHC-assisted projects.

Keep America Beautiful
Keep America Beautiful (KAB) is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to community improvement through beautification efforts. For over 50 years, KAB has combined education with hands-on stewardship to prevent litter and reduce waste, making America’s communities cleaner, greener, safer, and more livable.
KAB has launched an internet-based public awareness campaign featuring a new superhero – KAB Man! The campaign takes a humorously low-key approach to raising awareness of the organization, its focus and its initiatives. Go to www.kabman.org to view the three brief movies (“Webisodes”) of KAB Man's exploits.
Freecycle™ and Waste Management Work Together

Partnerships that Improve our Community
Waste Management is proud to be a partner in organizations that strengthen our communities, protect our land and water and improve our quality of life. Improving our communities is not an isolated mission. It requires the type of teamwork that Waste Management gets from successful partnerships with businesses, government, local agencies, non-profit organizations and individuals.
Freecycle is a grassroots community movement and nonprofit organization, based on the web [hosted by Yahoo], and made up of individual city groups that promote waste reuse among their members. Members have the opportunity to give and get great things for free, in an effort to keep unnecessary waste out of landfills.
Millions are Already Involved
There are almost 2,500 community groups and approximately 1.7 million individual users.
It’s Easy to Become a Member
Membership in Freecycle is free and open to all communities and all members that want to participate. To sign up for a Freecycle group, interested users simply need to find the appropriate region on the www.freecycle.org website.
Give it Away
When you want to find a new home for something --whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door -- you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle group.
Find Something for You
If you are looking to acquire something yourself, simply respond to a member’s offer, and you just might get it. After that, it’s up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and to set up a pickup time for passing on the treasure. Freecycle encourages members to select local charitable groups whenever possible.
