Wildlife Habitat Council

Our company is not just about trash... It’s about the environment.

The Spruce Ridge Landfill in Glencoe, MN has converted 79 acres of buffer area previously used for agriculture into natural grassland and wildflower habitat to enhance populations of the ring neck pheasant and other wildlife species. At the Hillsboro Landfill in Hillsboro, OR a guided nature walk shows off a large great blue heron rookery (Area herodias) and wetlands provide critical nesting and foraging habitat for many endangered species, while providing water purification and flood control benefits. Through partnerships with the Wildlife Habitat Council's (WHC) and with the help of WM employees and local community organizations, WM has developed habitat management programs on Company sites. WHC's Wildlife at Worksm Certification program focuses on wildlife management, and employee and community involvement. WHC's Corporate Lands for Learning (CLL) program fosters in learners, both adults and children, a clear understanding of the interdependence of ecology, economics, social structures and political process in both urban and rural areas. To date, the following 33 Waste Management facilities have received the Wildlife at Worksm certification. 3 of these facilities have also received the Corporate Lands for Learning certification.
