WM sells solid waste operations in Puerto Rico, Atlantic Canada
HOUSTON Earlier last month, Waste Management sold its solid waste operations in Puerto Rico and Atlantic Canada. In Puerto Rico, WM will remain an investor in the new company, called PR Waste Inc. The sale includes all WM landfills, transfer stations and collection operations on the island. All WM employees in Puerto Rico are now working for EC Waste.
The transaction also included a Waste Management landfill and collection operation in Alabama. “While our Puerto Rico operations were profitable, WM made the decision to divest the operations in Puerto Rico to allow us to increase our investments in other projects that will have a better payback over time,” said Dave McConnell, vice president of WM Supply Chain.
On May 2, GFL Environmental purchased WM assets in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador. GFL, headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario, purchased six hauling yards and three landfills. All 145 Waste Management employees in Atlantic Canada are now part of the GFL team.
“This transaction is good for all our stakeholders – our investors, customers, employees and communities and we look forward to working with GFL to ensure a smooth transition,” said Brad Muter, WM’s Area vice president of Eastern Canada.
